Modelling of Transient Emissions and Concentrations from Traffic in Street Canyons

چکیده
INTRODUCTION In the EU 5 framework project DECADE (2001-2003) a new methodology has been developed to calculate in detail the engine power required to drive a given vehicle over any particular route. It includes the rapidly changing (transient) demands placed on the engine, an area that has proved an obstacle to accurate simulations in the past. Together with the associated speed profiles, the actual power demands allow a detailed calculation of emissions and ambient air concentrations in street canyons. This makes the methodology a valuable tool for detailed assessments of the ambient air quality impact of e.g. street design (traffic lights, road bumps, busy crossings), driving patterns, driving behaviour and fleet composition.

16th International Conference on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes
The influence of vegetation on the concentrations of traffic pollutants in urban street canyons is examined using numerical simulations with the CFD code OpenFOAM. This CFD approach is validated against literature wind tunnel data on traffic pollutant dispersion in street canyons. The impact of avenues of trees is simulated for a variety of vegetation types and the full range of approaching win...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Ultrafine Particle Dispersion in Urban Street Canyons with the Spalart-Allmaras Turbulence Model
The increased traffic emissions and reduced ventilation of urban street canyons lead to the formation of high particle concentrations as a function of the related flow field and geometry. In this context, the use of advanced modelling tools, able to evaluate particle concentration under different traffic and meteorological conditions, may be helpful. In this work, a numerical scheme based on th...
متن کاملEstimation of greenhouse gases emissions from urban traffic: a case study of Hamadan city
Background and Objective: Transportation sector generates the largest share of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 and CH4) which causes global warming. “Stop-and-go” driving and congested traffic flow results in a decrease in average car speeds, an increase in traffic incidents, and finally escalates GHGs emissions. Hence, congestion is directly related to carbon emissions. The objective of this stu...
متن کاملModelling street level PM10 concentrations across Europe: source apportionment and possible futures
Despite increasing emission controls, particulate matter (PM) has remained a critical issue for European air quality in recent years. The various sources of PM, both from primary particulate emissions as well as secondary formation from precursor gases, make this a complex problem to tackle. In order to allow for credible predictions of future concentrations under policy assumptions, a modellin...
